Salvia is a perennial herb with a height of 30-100cm. The whole plant is densely covered with pale yellow pubescence and glandular hairs. Stems quadrangular, grooved, upper branched. Leaves are opposite, odd-pinnate; petioles are 1-7cm long; leaflets are usually 5, rarely 3 or 7, the apical leaflets are the largest, the lateral leaflets are smaller, the leaflets are oval to broadly oval, 2 long -7cm, width 0.8-5cm, the apex is acute or acuminate, the base is obliquely rounded or broadly wedge-shaped, the edges are crenellated, and both surfaces are densely covered with white pubescent hairs. Whorl umbels form terminal or fusiform racemes, each with 3-10 flowers, the lower ones are sparse, the upper ones are dense; bracts lanceolate, glabrous above, slightly hairy below; calyx nearly campanulate , purple; corolla two-lipped, blue-purple, 2-2.7cm long, upper lip erect, sickle-shaped, apex slightly lobed, lower lip shorter than upper lip, apex 3-lobed, central lobe longer and larger than both sides; developing stamens 2, inserted in the middle of the lower lip, extending out of the corolla, staminodes 2, linear, inserted on both sides of the throat of the upper lip, the anthers degenerated into petals; the front of the disc is slightly enlarged; the ovary is superior, 4-parted, Style slender, stigma 2-lobed, lobes ranging. Nutlets oblong, brown or black when ripe, about 3.2cm long and 1.5mm in diameter, wrapped in persistent calyx. Flowering May-September, Fruiting August-October
